La recherche sur les troubles anxieux chez les enfants et les adolescents a pris un essor considérable au cours des dernières années. Il y a à peine vingt ans, la littérature était encore rare et se résumait le plus souvent à des études de cas sur le traitement de phobies spécifiques. Depuis ce temps, plusieurs études de traitement ont été réalisées en Amérique du Nord, en Australie et en Europe. Parallèlement à ces études, on a aussi assisté à une explosion des connaissances sur les facteurs associés au développement de l'anxiété pathologique chez les jeunes. Si ces travaux sont d'une importance considérable pour le développement de modèles conceptuels, ils guident aussi l'intervention. Un autre domaine de recherche qui a pris beaucoup d'ampleur concerne l'épidémiologie des troubles anxieux chez les enfants. Ces études permettent de documenter l'ampleur du problème et d'orienter les programmes de dépistage et de traitement. Enfin, plusieurs chercheurs ont mis au point des outils sensibles et valides pour évaluer les troubles anxieux chez les jeunes, ce qui a longtemps fait défaut, et ce particulièrement pour les cliniciens et les chercheurs francophones. Cet ouvrage est une recension par thèmes des développements récents dans le domaine de l'anxiété chez les enfants et les adolescents. Le premier chapitre porte sur l'épidémiologie des troubles anxieux ; il aborde aussi les facteurs associés comme les facteurs familiaux. Le second chapitre porte sur la neurobiologie des troubles anxieux. Le troisième présente les principaux outils d'évaluation qui permettent d'évaluer l'anxiété. Le quatrième chapitre présente une recension des études d'efficacité des traitements psychologiques et pharmacologiques des troubles anxieux. Enfin, les trois derniers chapitres présentent les données liées au trouble obsessionnel-compulsif, au trouble de stress post-traumatique et à la phobie sociale, troubles anxieux pour lesquels les connaissances sont moins développées.
